Hello again!

I've been around Instagram for a while, but with a 2-year hiatus, I get that you are wondering "Who is that person?"

I could tell you that I am Claudia, 30-something years old and I live with my family... Bla. Let's play 2 truths and a lie instead. Can you figure out which one of the following isn't true about me?

1️⃣ I'm a mother to an 8-year old. Our relationship unfortunately started with a postpartum depression, but I am happy to report that motherhood gets easier with time and that 8 is a thoroughly enjoyable age.

2️⃣ I'm a maker. In my spare time I sew. I'm passionate about sustainable clothing and make a lot of things for myself and my kiddo.

3️⃣ I'm a mentor. In 2020 I started mentoring mothers who (like me) were struggling with motherhood. I firmly believe that banishing motherhood into the four walls of our homes is wrong and that no mom should be alone with her questions and struggles.

Okay, I think this is a pretty easy one, if you don't know me that well. Give me your best guess: which one out of those three is untrue? 1️⃣, 2️⃣ or 3️⃣?

Hello from the other side... Maybe... Almost...

These past few months, I've been going through some things and I wasn't sure how (or even IF) to post about them.

I'm a mommy mentor after all, so how can I post for moms when I don't have my sh*t together? For the past few months I didn't have any exciting promises to make, I didn't have shiny marketing talks. What value would posts of "I'm so tired, I don't have any energy" have for you?

And then I got reminded of two things: 1️⃣ My story matters and 2️⃣ there's value in real words, words that come from the heart.

My last post in April was "We shouldn't be wondering what is wrong with us." Well, that's exactly what I've been doing. I've been struggling with exhaustion for most of this year and I've been trying to figure out the reason. I've seen doctors and dieticians, I've meditated and bought an accupressure mat.

My focus has been very much on the inside, on my health, on my family. I've been managing my limited resources.

Am I completely through this? Definitely not. Do I want to get better at sharing my journey? Yes, absolutely.

In case you don't know me yet: Hi, I'm Claudia. I have PMDD and struggle with depression and mood-swings in my cycle. Every two weeks, I feel like I'm the worst mom (and partner). I'm also a mommy mentor, because I believe that every mom who is going through a hard time should have someone by her side.

Today, I'm learning to talk about my struggles. And I'm here for you, if you want to talk.

It's PMD Awareness Month. PMD stands for "pre-menstrual disorders".

Usually, I am very vocal about my life with PMDD, but this month, I could barely bring myself to write about it.

Lately, I have been tired. And when I write tired, I mean exhausted. A deep, physical and mental exhaustion that no amount of coffee and sleep can combat.

Being who I am, I start looking for a pattern. Is the exhaustion tied to my menstrual cycle? Is it something that gets worse in winter (yes, SAD is also a thing for me)? Could it be tied to my medication?

After a couple of days looking at this from every angle, talking to my doctor, talking to my peers, I am still exhausted, but now I am also angry.

There is so little known about PMDs, that we don't really have a clue how to treat them either. A lot is left to trial-and-error. What works for one woman, might not work for the next.
Whatever you experience could be a side-effect of the treatment or a symptom of your PMD.

I know that not only me, but many women with PMDD are left wondering "Who would I be, if I wasn't that tired all the time?" Or "What could I achieve, if I wasn't depressed two weeks out of every month?"

That really is no way to live. And that is why it's time we connect the dots between hormones and mental health. It's time we share more of our stories and it's time for more research, so that women can get the answers they deserve.
